Diablo’s main story takes place under the cathedral in a small town called Tristram.
It is here that Diablo, the Lord of Terror, is defeated by an unnamed warrior after several previous battles
After defeating Diablo, the unnamed warrior affixed the Demon’s Soul Stone to his forehead in an attempt to retain the monster’s essence within his body. Later in canon, it is mentioned that Diablo thought he had an “escape plan” instead of death if he was defeated. The unnamed warrior is miserable ever since doing this and is gradually corrupted by the demonic spirit over the next few days.
Deckard Kane narrates a story to another group of adventurers passing through Diablo II’s rogue camp
One of these adventurers appears in the aftermath of the devastation wrought by the unnamed warrior currently possessing Wana and seeks to find the cause of the evil from the evil warrior (known throughout Diablo II as the Dark Wanderer). As the player progresses through each of the four acts, they face two main evils (Mephisto – Act III and Diablo – Act IV, the final main evil with Baal being the main boss in the expansion pack, which is Act V). ), and two lesser evils (Andariel – Act I and Duriel – Act II) who spend the first two acts as minor bosses.
The player learns the truth behind corruption and the history of soul stones
Diablo freed Mephisto (Lord of Hate) and Baal (Lord of Destruction) from their soul stones, taught to them by the fallen angel Izual (the minor boss of Act IV) long before they were corrupted. Eventually, the player finally reaches Mephisto and Diablo and kills them in their actions. The story continues during the game’s expansion, where the player pursues the last of the Prime Evils: Baal, who is chasing after the mythical World Stone who is trying to corrupt it.
