One night, the arrival of a new Heraldo completely transforms the daily life of the place
Narrative
Under a scorching sky on the side of a highway on the coast of Ceará, Motel Destino is a place of dangerous games of desire, power and violence. The sixth film, directed by Karim Enouz, will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, following Madame Satã (2002), O Abismo Prateado (2011), Nevidljivi život Eurídice Gusmão (2019), Marinheiro das Montanhas (2021) and Firebrand (2023). Karim Enouz’s latest erotic thriller, Motel Destino, is a deliciously cinematic mix of desire, sex and crime. Ainuz is a Cannes favorite and so far six of his films have premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.
This year Motel Destino was nominated for the Palme d’Or and the Queer Palme
Located somewhere on the coast of Brazil, Motel Destino is a dingy sex motel characterized by neon lights. The hotel is run by Elias and his partner Diane, who are oblivious to the world of sex and crime that the motel is known for. They are so absorbed in this world that Elias is often seen as a voyeuristic pleasure seeker and covers up criminal activities to keep the police away. This is a place where no guest stays long and no one asks questions.
He soon becomes part of the couple’s dynamic, disrupting the established order
One day, the young and handsome Heraldo arrives at the motel, bringing with him his criminal baggage. The three main characters then enter the third and final act of this queer noir film, achieving their destiny. The film is beautifully shot with intense and uncomfortable close-ups of the characters; faces trapped in their situations and sweaty bodies brimming with desire. Close-ups of Heraldo with his naked body portray him as strong and fragile at the same time.
It’s worth watching
Diane has a crush on him and is eager for someone to give her a glimmer of hope to escape her abusive relationship with Elias. The film’s color palette seamlessly shifts between neon reds and blues, with the red representing the inhabitants’ carnal desires and the blue symbolizing the strange feeling of emptiness that follows the euphoria. Motel Destino masterfully focuses on raw emotions and carnal desires. Captured with excellent cinematography, the lack of world-building seems somewhat intentional at first, giving the audience a sense of detachment from society… Adios…
